Climate for change - A model for participatory adaptation measures towards a carbon neutral university

Progressive climate change is forcing the development of adequate strategies to achieve climate neutrality at different administrative levels and in different institutions. In this project, we use the example of conferences because of their mass character and the associated high energy consumption. Although event management strategies have evolved from focusing on the theme of the event to taking into account the principles of climate neutrality, there is still no universal model suitable for any industry, including the scientific world.

The aim of this project is to present an innovative and universal conference model developed from an interdisciplinary perspective of sustainable use of environmental resources, for implementation in the space of the JU Campus.
The focus is on methodological aspects, using a mixed-mode apparatus:
1) systemati review of scientific articles and so-called grey literature,
2) study visits to European academic centres, and
3) a series of 2 original participatory workshops integrating stakeholders from different sectors and backgrounds (including the university community, local entrepreneurs, representatives of NGOs and public institutions).

The workshop work will be carried out using the quadruple helix method, research walks and mindfulness activities, following the idea of equal voice of the participants and maintaining virtual contact. Through our project, we intend to promote conferences organised and managed according to the 4I principles, but also to sensitise, inspire and activate researchers to change their approach from isolation to integration with the socio-economic environment of academia. The piloting of the methodology and initial research results will form the basis of a grant application to the Foundation for Polish Science on the broader topic of climate adaptation strategies in universities.
