Prof. Małgorzata Grodzińska-Jurczak

I am a biologist by education (master’s degree in environmental biology, 1990). My academic achievements feature three thematic trends. I started my career in classic ecology, investigating the influence of acidic? precipitation on the natural environment during a four-year PhD course (PhD thesis, 1995). I continued research concerning the effects of toxic substances on the environment, focusing throughout the next decade on the topic of limiting the negative impact of municipal waste on the environment (including human health) via educational activities. Achievements from that period formed the basis for my obtaining in 2005 a post-doctoral degree in Natural Sciences and biology, with a specialisation in ecological education. From that moment onwards, my activity in interdisciplinary research began. Since 2006, I have specialised in the social aspects of nature conservation. Since 1994, I have been employed, without interruption, at the Institute of Environmental Sciences, Jagiellonian University (first as Assistant Professor and later as Adjunct Professor).  In 2014 I was nominated for the professor. Since 1994, I have been employed, without interruption, at the Institute of Environmental Sciences, Jagiellonian University (first as Assistant Professor, as Adjunct Professor and eventually as Full-Professor). The Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences is where I graduated from, gained my PhD degree and post-doctoral title. I am currently the Head of Nature Protection, Wildlife Management and Environmental Education Research Team at the Institute of Environmental Sciences, Jagiellonian University.

At the end of 2006, I initiated research in a new domain, namely social aspects of nature conservation (human dimension – HD), concerning a wide definition of nature conservation. HD refers to research conducted using the methods taken from social sciences to investigate human attitudes and activities towards nature and determine how they can be applied in natural resource management. The decision to take up this topic, which was a novelty in Poland at that time, arose from my awareness of the need to transform the natural resource management system from a purely traditional system, based on the demand to protect particular elements of nature, into a more modern one that would include public participation and the development of rules to govern this participation in practice. I am particularly interested in the European ecological network Natura 2000, which differs from other national forms of nature conservation, thus causing human-nature conflicts. I pay much attention to the methods of management of these conflicts (e.g. through the participation of various social groups, socio-ecological consultation), social communication methods, as well as the study of attitudes to the environment both in children and adults. Apart from scientific research, I am involved in the popularisation of science and in educational activities, i.e. planning, conducting, and evaluating programmes and information or educational campaigns concerning nature conservation and municipal waste management intended for various types of audience (local governments, national park staff, directorate for environmental protection staff, teachers, school students etc.), and developing educational materials.

My professional activity is largely devoted to didactics. I am engaged in full-time teaching (180 h load) within biology, environmental protection, biology and geography, and biology and geology programmes. Starting in the 1994/95 academic year I have held Fundamentals of ecology and Industrial ecology classes, as well as Environmental engineering and protection lectures and field trips. I coordinated classes from the Visualisation and communication techniques subject area. I also supervised individual students. I currently run independently the following courses (classes plus lectures): Ecological education, Social and economic aspects of nature conservation, Environmental protection policy, Research funding and conducting research projects, and a seminar for second-cycle graduate programme students. I am one of the lecturers of courses in English for PhD students, namely Practical aspects of nature conservation and Research management. I have supervised bachelor’s and master’s theses (20 and 27 dissertations respectively completed to date) in biology, biology and geography, biology and geology, studies in mathematics and natural sciences, and environmental protection. I have also run individual projects for the ERASMUS programme (6). I have been, and still remain, a supervisor of PhD theses (2 candidates already promoted, 4 with formally approved candidate status). I also teach external students (mostly teachers) of biology and geography programme at the Jagiellonian University. I review PhD dissertations (4). Although I find myself a demanding academic teacher, I have received highly positive opinions from students for many years.

Apart from students, I teach teachers, train clerks and other professional groups. I am a trainer (level 4 of training competences according to the European Qualifications Framework).

Together with doing research and teaching students I hold administrative functions. In the Jagiellonian University I am: (1) the Head of Nature Protection, Wildlife Management and Environmental Education Research Team in the Institute of Environmental Sciences, (2) Departmental Coordinator of EU Students’ Exchange Program – ERASMUS, (3) Dean’s Proxy for compulsory student internships in the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences for biology and geography study programme, and (4) Institutional Coordinator for research and education international exchange. I seek to apply the results of research that we conduct in our Team. Therefore, I act as a consultant and adviser to numerous projects. My functions include: Consultant of the Polish People's Party and the Union of Rural Communes of the Republic of Poland for the environmental subsidy act, Consultant for public communication in nature protection to the Małopolska Provincial Office in Kraków and the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Kraków, Polish Chamber of Ecology expert in nature protection, Member of the Consultation Committee of Małopolska Environmental Protection and Water Management Fund in Kraków, Member of the Academic Council of the Małopolska Children’s University, Ministry of Education expert for the general curriculum in ecological education (from October), consultant to educational projects and information campaigns in municipal offices.

In 2002, I was appointed to the editorial board of Biologia w Szkole (Biology at school), and in 2011 I became a member of the Advisory Board of Edukacja Biologiczna i Środowiskowa (Biological and environmental education). I have also joined the editorial boards of the following journals: Diversity (2009), International Electronic Journal of Environmental Education (IEJEE-Green) (2010), Nature Conservation (2011), and Journal of Scientific Research and Reports – (http://www.sciencedomain.org/journal-home.php?id=22) (2013)

I have been, and still remain, a member of both Polish (Polish Copernicus Society of Naturalists – in charge of the Section of Biology Education for two terms; Polish Fulbright Alumni Association, Polish Association for Landscape Ecology, European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists - Polish Division) and international scientific organisations (IUCN Member – Commission on Education and Communication (CEC); International Association of Landscape Ecology, the International Association of Public Participation; the International Association for Society and Natural Resources; European Early Childhood Education Research Association; NAAEE - North American Association for Environmental Education; auDes - Association of University Departments of Environmental Sciences in Europe; ESSENCE – Network of Environmental Sciences).

I evaluate and review research projects within EU programmes, EEA (Norwegian Financial Mechanism), the National Centre for Research and Development, and the National Science Centre.
